The First Step

“We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction,
that our lives had become unmanageable.”

Reading: Narcotics Anonymous text, p. 13-22.

Introduction:

The first step talks about powerlessness and the unmanageability of life. When you were using, did you feel powerless? Did you feel unable to control you own actions, emotions or behaviors? Did you feel lost or confused or overwhelmed by life? Did you ever feel unable to go on living? These are some feelings that addicts have before taking the first step.

When you were using, was your life unmanageable and out of control? Did you have problems at school? or at work? or with the law? or with your family? did you feel that you had no options other than drinking and/or drugging? these are some of the problems addicts have before taking the first step.

The first step offers freedom. Freedom from the pain that using drugs and/or alcohol can bring, and freedom from the harmful outcomes of using. By first admitting our inability to recover on our own, we can work towards recovery through sharing and growing with other recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.

The next question can help you see the main ideas of the first step. If you think about them carefully, they can help to open the door to freedom through recovery. READ about the first step in NA book, and THEN spend some time answering the questions and talking with others about the first step.

1.) When using, we are often powerless over our thoughts, feelings and actions.

WRITE down some times when your using made you powerless,
and THEN WRITE down the problems that were caused by this powerlessness.

I was powerless over my Thoughts...

and it caused these problems

I was powerless over my Feelings...

and it caused these problems

I was powerless over my Actions...

and it caused these problems

2.) WRITE down how your drinking and/or drug use was different from your friends’ use. Did you use more than they did? Did you get in more trouble? Did it make you feel bad?

3.) WRITE down the problems you have had in any of these areas because of your drug and/or alcohol use.
